Principles of Five Pillar Wellness Risk
Previous Article: That Difficult Case
- Measuring wellness risk is not measuring disease risk. Disease risk is taken care of by the medical and
epidemiology societies. We understand now that just because there are no obvious signs or symptoms of disease,
this does not mean we are necessarily 'well'.
- Five Pillar Wellness Risk has to do with self-help wellness and how well a person is conforming to the
science in the self-help field.
What We Do Not Measure
The Five Pillar Wellness approach chooses to leave addiction
issues, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes etc., to the medical establishment. We focus on measuring self-help parameters
that can be easily fixed and ones that science sheds some light on.
Everyone believes they are well. We ask people to make a guess at grading their wellness on 35 scores. Then we
measure their actual wellness against scientific standards on those 35 scores. Lastly, we compare the guesses
against the real scores and calculate the wellness risk mathematically.
If a person believes they have very good wellness, when they really don’t, then they have a Wellness Risk. If a
person believes they have very poor wellness, when they really don’t, then they are also at a Wellness Risk. The
farther away they are from a standard, then the worse the Wellness Risk is.
Knowing the Five Pillar Wellness Risk we can categorize a group (cohort) of people large or small. Knowing the
cohort risk allows a more efficient management of wellness for that group.
